A Place to Be Free

By

Gema

Gema writes from a prison in WA.

A girl trying to find her soul

an escape with rope and toe up a tree

a knot a swing

A place to be free

she harnesses all her confidence within

and pushes off with and against the wind

her laughter heard by passers-by’s’ ears

to bring a smile from ear to ear

forever in my heart

the child I was that year.

‍

I miss faces, I miss time

I want to fall back into my flow

of when I’d meet back with people

from the streets of Perth.

‍

I wonder if anyone misses me

but probably only my face

I think I hold on with strength and passion

and I don’t know how to go on being in jail,

I need a hug but I’m fussy

I need to see where there is a smile

and why does the rain not bother me

nor the cold.

I’ll wait.

But some say it will be

the death of me.

My heart weeps

My ribs shattered

The knife cuts

as my tears fill a cup

Emotions overtake

I’m blinded now

It seals my fate

Locked up my heart’s caged

I have escaped death’s deal

and now I only dream of people

in the world I have seen

To be wait in time inside

as they do not want

a reminder of time

near the control

of man-made crimes.

Cold blows the wind tonight, sweetheart, cold are the drops of rain, cold are the four walls of my cell, so cold I shall remain.

These “emotions” that carry me. It’s from these that you see me. Let not what you see, be all I can be. I’m so much more, this isn’t all.

Alone in my cell, 3 metres long and 2 metres wide, the ceiling above, as low as the tide, the tide I’ll never see for so many years.
