‘She’ll Be Apples’ – Art From Somebody’s Daughter

By

Somebody’s Daughter Theatre Company

Deep Ocean By Lanie, Gesso, Acrylic on Paper, 2024

Somebody’s Daughter Theatre Company (SDTC) began running art workshops with women at Fairlea Women’s Prison over forty years ago. Weekly workshops continue with the women at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre and Tarrengower Women’s Prison to this day.

The artwork that emerges communicates a multitude of themes, voicing the women’s humanity, vulnerability and dreams. The satisfaction and sense of achievement the women experience can be life changing and in some cases, life saving.

The year’s workshops culminate annually in an exhibition of artworks alongside a theatre production woven from the women’s life stories delivered with humour, drama and song. The following images are from the 2024 production and exhibition titled “She’ll Be Apples.” More art to come in future editions!

Conservation Is Key

By Shannon

Oil Paint on Canvas

2023

By the 1930's fewer than 50 cape Zebras remained in the wild.
Fortunately, stricter controls and the establishment of the Mountain Zebra National Park have given the species a reprieve from extinction.

She'll Be Apples

By Sylvie, Jasmine, Emma, Rebecca, Kim and Amelda

Acrylic on canvas

2024

The artists from Tarrengower chose to paint this collaboration with the idea of contributing to the production "She'll Be Apples".
The image was constructed to create an uplifting feeling of safety and freedom, however an element of uncertainty remains (in the form of snake ribbons).

‘Love is Rebuilding My Life’

By Phillip

There’s irony, hypocrisy, fallacy, a vast ocean of distance to cross. The “saint”, the “sinner”, it’s lunacy, that the ignorant could save the lost.

Methfairytale

By Karie

I’m not belle of the ball, not the very least, but we have something in common, I’m in love with a beast. But the beast is not a person but a drug that I call meth, I’ve been talking to myself for hours, I’m running out of breath.

Nostalgia

By Dennis

Nostalgia is a gentle haze, a soft and fading, golden maze, where time itself begins to blur, and memory’s touch is sweet and pure.
