‘I Cannot Express How Extremely Cold I Am’

Hello,

‍

I am 60 years old. This is my fourth time in prison in 40 years.

‍

This prison is on the far north coast where there’s a great climate, but I’ve been in for 7 weeks, all of which have been in segro (solitary confinement), which is south facing and has forced air-conditioning – even the yard doesn’t get any sun!

‍

I had no money for the June activity buy-up, and just enough to order thermal underwear (bottom/top) and a beanie for the July activity buy-up. Then I was told it wouldn’t arrive till the end of August! Winter will be over!

‍

I’ve made numerous requests. Everything from asking for second-hand thermals, help from the Salvos, and for my loved ones to drop off a pair. Apparently, family dropping off clothing is a thing of the past.

‍

I cannot express how extremely cold I am – it all just falls on deaf ears. I’m sure I’ve read that cold exposure is a low-level torture technique.

‍

Yours sincerely,

Billy

Each day I wake up in here I’m re-shocked, so to speak…how on Earth has life gotten to this point for me? For a while there I was waiting for Ashton Kutcher to jump out and tell me I’d been “Punk’d”.

There is a particular part of our prison populations that seems to have been forgotten, that gets no mention and yet these people who are the ones that need help and support when incarcerated with a unique set of issues that just aren’t recognised.

So the parole referred me to seek out a security classification to be possibly considered for low security.

What’s been happening at your prison at the moment? Our frequency of ‘lock-ins’ is increasing to about 2 per week while staff do training for the handover.
